"The contemporary vision of an artist"

My presentation of John Marshall, a modern American silversmith

Attending my first "Silver Symposium" at NYU, this month of march 2000, just landing from the Old Continent, I discovered in an astonished, breathtaking admiration, a'god' silversmith displaying the magic power of creating and recreating the earth at a man's scale.

Combining modern and antique powerful techniques of craftsmanship in forming and decorating silver mixed with other precious metals, inspired by a huge vision of immortal beauty, the metal is raised, pressed, hammered, folded, sinked, stretched and finally cut by a powerful man, working like a 'Titan' with a phenomenal hydraulic press and his high developed sense of creativity.

In a kind of dream, I had a vision of a modern 'Vulcan' hammering the earth at the ‘Beginning of Time’, his ‘Works of Art’ like huge panoramic sculptures of everlasting sightseeing’s "revisited" through a new artistic expression.

Different sceneries of America were recreated in front of me: " Rocky Mountains", "Colorado", "Grand Canyon", "Ice and Snow in Alaska" in a dramatic combination of silver, copper, titanium, steal and acrylic.

His refreshed and modernly adapted revival of ‘mokume’ techniques, early created by ancient Japanese artists and rediscovered by Tiffany's designers, made an astonishing impression on my sensibility.

Like alternated layers of colored ground, 18 sheets of copper and 18 sheets of silver are laminated, heated, folded, cut, and finally hammered, producing marbleized patterns, combinations of swirly warm and cold colors.
Figured silk, watered cloth of ‘moiré', redesigning the circles formed by pebbles thrown into the waters or the traces of different geographical heights on a metallic map.
An abstract vibration translated in a materialistic way.

Visions of an artist! Gems are enchased in breathtaking sidereal landscapes where they are 'touched' by the light of creation, reflecting an inner energy.

I deeply feel that artistic creativity is god's expression through human hands.

A silversmith becomes a poet when his works are connected to the fantastic creative power of nature and when he is able, through his art, to express his roots to a native soil.

I discovered a new, fresh and contemporary vision of silversmithing, and A silversmith inspired by a phenomenal power: his personal feeling and search for ‘Eternal Beauty’.
